Mosquitoes carry diseases such as malaria, heartworm, dengue fever, encephalitis, epidemic polyarthritis, Rift Valley fever, Ross River Fever, and West Nile virus and yellow fever. They do not transmit HIV. In Australia, most mosquito-borne diseases are Dengue fever, Australian encephalitis or "Murray Valley encephalitis", Ross River (RR) virus disease and Barmah Forest (BF) virus disease. The most effective way in preventing the spread or being infected with mosquito-borne diseases is to get rid of them before they appear. Stagnant water is the primary breeding place for mosquitoes. Do not allow any standing water to last for more than two days. As for treatments, there are available calamine lotions that would soothe the bite. As for some severe cases, seeing a doctor is advisable.
